Farmers Markets in Melbourne's Inner West

Nine o'clock on a Saturday morning. Coffee in one hand, an empty bag in the other, and forty-odd stalls of the freshest local produce in Melbourne's west waiting to fill it. Four farmers markets rotate through the inner west each month: Edgewater on the first Saturday, West Footscray on the second, Yarraville on the third, Spotswood on the fourth. Same hours every time, 9am to 1pm, rain or shine.

A real farmers market runs on one rule. The person behind the stall grew, raised, or made what's sitting on it. You buy sourdough from the baker who shaped it and blueberries from the family that picked them this week. Ask where anything came from and the answer comes with a place name attached.

Weekend Markets in Melbourne

Four markets sharing the calendar means most weekends there's a farmers market on somewhere in Melbourne's inner west. Each market publishes its stallholder list the Wednesday before, so you can plan the shop before you leave the house.

Come at nine if you can. A morning market rewards the early crowd with first pick of the produce and the shortest coffee queue. The stalls pack down at one, which leaves the rest of your Saturday free to explore the best the west has to offer.

Farm to Table Shopping in Melbourne

Seasonal fruit and vegetables picked days before market day. Bread still warm at opening, pasture-raised eggs and meat, honey from hives close enough to visit, cheese, pastries, flowers, and small-batch pantry staples you'll struggle to find in a supermarket. Most of it travelled less than a morning's drive to reach the trestle table, which makes this farm to table shopping in its plainest form.

Regulars walk in from Yarraville, Newport, Williamstown, Seddon, Footscray and Maribyrnong. Plenty travel across from the other side of town. Entry is a gold coin at the gate, and that coin goes straight back into community groups across the west.
